In 1912, Wayne Whipple, an American history author, designed this flag and submitted it to a nation-wide contest to find the flag that most represented American history. The design includes a centrally located six-pointed 13-star group, representing the original 13 colonies. It is surrounded by a large circle made up of the remaining 35 stars. Out of over 500 entries, it was chosen as the winner by the 27th President of the United States, William Howard Taft, for the global peace movement in the years preceding World War I.
