Corn & Beans #62
6x6ft Barn Quilt - East Trail
Note: Tracy B’s Market and Farm Brewery
This barn quilt commemorates the work of Calvin Keeney who developed the stringless bean in LeRoy on Keeney Road. His work took place in corn fields, where he planted small plots of string beans. He selected beans that had few strings and replanted the seed. The corn kept the beans from crossbreeding. After several years, he had developed a bean that did not have strings. Ultimately, he developed over a dozen varieties of stringless beans. Some of these varieties are still available through Burbee such as the yellow pencil-pod bean.
It hangs at Tracy B’s Market where a wide variety of produce and plant material are offered, as well as Christmas Trees. More recently, a micro-brewery has also opened at Tracy B’s.
