Genesee Community College invites the public to the last of four scheduled presentations in the new Historical Horizons Lecture Series. In “Recalling Reconstruction: The Ugly Story of a Splendid Failure,” Derek Maxfield, GCC associate professor of History will discuss the end of the Civil War and how President Lincoln counseled his generals not to gloat in victory and to avoid bitterness and animosity. “Let ’em up easy,” he said. Lincoln did not live to oversee the Reconstruction, which wound up taking a dark turn.

Historical Horizons is sponsored by GCC’s new History Club and was developed from the success of the Civil War Initiative which featured dozens of events throughout the past three years commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. This fall, a different historical lecture is scheduled on the first Wednesday of the month.
