Batavia native nominated for Eddie Award

Feb 5, 2015

Josh Earl

By the end of the month, Batavia native Josh Earl might be able to add another trophy to his rapidly growing display case. Earl, a supervising editor for the reality show “Deadliest Catch,” has received his fifth nomination for an American Cinema Editors award. He already has one Eddie, which he won in 2010, the first year he was nominated. He also owns four Emmy Awards, the most recent one coming just a few months ago. The nominations came out Friday, before Earl was even awake. “Since my wife Maressa is always up right at the crack of dawn, she was the first one to hit me with the news,” Earl said through email from his Los Angeles home. “Gotta admit, it was a pretty rad start to the day. Granted, I was groggy and half asleep ... but still, it was extremely cool.” Earl is nominated in the Best Edited Non-Scripted Series category. The other nominees are from “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and “Vice.” Earl was co-nominated with Johnny Bishop for their work on the season 10 episode “Lost at Sea,” which centers around the death of a member of the United States Coast Guard during a rescue attempt for the crew of the fishing boat “Alaska Mist.” One of the captains also decided to check into rehab for a substance abuse issue. “As with many of our episodes, this had the challenge of dealing with some pretty heavy subject matters that effect many in their everyday lives,” Earl said. “It's walking that line of respecting those involved and bringing the story to the viewer.” After winning the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Picture Editing in August, Earl said he had sifted through nearly 26,000 hours of footage for the “epic” 10th season. Earl has previously been nominated for an Eddie in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014. “None of this could be done without the amazing ‘Deadliest Catch’ crew,” said. “I’ve said many times they’re like a big, crazy, extended family, and we share this nomination with them. Win or lose, It’s a complete honor.” The awards will be presented Jan. 30 in Beverly Hills.
