An authentic taste of Mexico in Le Roy

Jul 12, 2019

An authentic taste of Mexico can be found in Le Roy at Mama Chavez’s Taqueria.

Tucked away on Mill Street, Mama Chavez’s makes freshly made authentic Mexican food like nachos, street tacos, flautas, burritos, tostadas and quesadillas.

Run by Maria Chavez, along with her husband, Jose Sr., and three children, Jose Jr., Armando and Emily, Maria brings to Le Roy recipes she learned from her mother in San Nicolas del los Augustos in Guanajuato, Mexico.

“I always wanted to have a restaurant of my own,” Chavez said. “I love to cook, and I wanted something for my kids who will maybe one day inherit it.”

One of 12 children, she spent her childhood in the kitchen helping her mother prepare meals which cultivated her love of cooking. And after coming to the United States, she said she always made potato tacos for her children and they loved it, before beginning to make it for friends before deciding to retire early in June 2019 to follow her dream.

Mama Chavez’s Taqueria is located on 7 Mill St. in Le Roy and is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For more information, call (585) 502-5093.
