Rolling Hills Asylum

Genesee County and New York State are not just a places to play – it’s a place that can play to your fears and make you believe in ghosts.

Rolling Hills Asylum

Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany, NY is known to be one of the most haunted places in the United States. Its notorious reputation is the primary reason why almost all the national television paranormal shows have visited this desolate location in Genesee County. A popular (and tall) ghost that is seen frequently by visitors and staff is believed to be a former patient named Roy. Reports of voices, footsteps, doors opening and closing by themselves are commonly reported. The evidence gathered by visitors and paranormal groups is pretty significant.

Established in 1827, the Genesee County Poor House (originally a working farm) soon became a dumping ground for the outcasts of society. Widows and orphans mingled with lunatics and the unclaimed dead were buried on the property.  With over 1,700 documented deaths and hundreds not recorded, it's no wonder Haunted North America rated it as the second most haunted site in the United States.

Rolling Hill Asylum offers a wide-array of opportunities virtually every day…and night of the week. Daytime history tours, movie nights to to all-night ghost hunts, there are several ways you can explore this fascinating place. Rolling Hills Asylum is part of the Haunted History Trail of New York State – which is a collection of 65 haunted inns, restaurants, museums, military locations, events and more. There are many travelers who enjoy adding a little “paranormal” to their journeys, whether it be staying in a reputed haunted hotel, ghost hunting a spooky location or learning about history through a ghost walk. Haunted History Trail of New York is a truly unique tourism program that captured the growing interests of the paranormal curious. There are several Haunted History Trail of New York State locations within an hours drive of Rolling Hills Asylum.
