The Fair begins July 15th. Don't miss out on all of the fun events!

The Landmark Society of Genesee County’s fourth annual House and Garden Tour will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.This year the proceeds will go to the Batavia Cemetery Association to assist with its efforts to restore the Richmond Mausoleum.

The Le Roy Barn Quilt Trail is a scavenger hunt, a romp through the town to find carefully crafted works of art. They’re located not only on barns, but houses, sheds and fences. And many of them are located right in the village. Hardly rural locales.

Nationally award-winning balloon artist Janice Spagnola will be appearing this year at the Genesee County Fair, July 15th-19th. Janice transforms thousands of latex balloons into works of art. “I call what I do air sculpture” says Janice.

On Thursday, Batavia Downs will become the newest stop on the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) fair circuit when the Genesee County leg of that series convenes for the first time.

In Batavia, the Information Center is a booth in the parking lot of the Holland Land Office Museum, where seniors from Genesee County Office for the Aging’s RSVP program, along with volunteers from civic organizations and community supporters, keep the booth open during the summer.

The ninth season of the Downtown Batavia Public Market started today.The Downtown FARMCY will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Thursday, through Sept. 25. The location has changed. It's now in the parking lot at Bank Street and Alva Place (across from Jerome Center/UMMC). Parking is plentiful.

The Batavia Peace Garden is one of several dedicated in 2012 to mark the bicentennial of the War of 1812. According to the Foundation’s website, these gardens celebrate the 200 years of peace and long-standing friendship between the United States and Canada. That friendship is marked on the first stone along the walkway with engravings of an eagle and a maple leaf. That’s where my walkthrough began.

The Oakfield-Alabama American Legion Post #626 is hosting a series of events this week as part of its Cost of Freedom Tribute at the Pembroke Town Park, located next to Pembroke High School, 1145 Main Road (Route 77) in Corfu. On Thursday, June 12, opening ceremonies will take place.

Members of the First Presbyterian Church of Le Roy will find out Thursday if the State Board for Historic Preservation has approved their bid to enshrine the church’s sanctuary, hall and parsonage on the register. Being placed on the registers would be an honor more than 200 years in the making for the church, constructed by many of the area’s earliest settlers.

It’s that time of year when local farmers’ markets re-open for the summer season. Thanks to farmers’ markets, we can buy the freshest produce available direct from our county’s farmers. Most produce is picked in the morning before farmers head to the market.

The Batavia Lions Club is hosting the 5th Annual Bike Tour on Saturday, June 14th. Join us for a 25-mile ride or 50-mile ride. Road assistance, bike support, free fruit and drinks will be available throughout the tour. Free hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be provided to riders upon completion.

The Genesee Country Farmers’ Market opens for the season on Tuesday, June 10, at the market’s location in the Batavia Downs parking lot located on Park Road.
