BATAVIA — The public has about three more weeks to view the 34 scarecrows that decorate Main Street downtown in the 2022 Business Improvement District (BID) contest.
The scarecrows will be allowed to stay up until Nov. 4 and community members can go to The Daily News or BID Facebook pages to vote on their favorite scarecrows.
“Families and businesses participated, as well as Robert Morris, Jackson and John Kennedy schools,” said BID Executive Director Shannon Maute. “Voting for your favorite scarecrow goes until Halloween.”
The first-, second- and third-place finishers will get cash prizes.
A couple of blocks down from Neighborhood Legal Services, 45 Main St., is the scarecrow display three of Neighborhood’s employees put together.
“There was a team of us working on designing the scarecrow,” said Assistant Supervising Attorney Mary Hanson. The co-workers who helped her were Paralegal Darlene Westphal and Secretary Cherie Hickey.
“I didn’t physically put it up, but I helped with the design and the stuffing,” Hanson said.
There are two Neighborhood Legal Services scarecrows in the display. One is a gentleman in a suit and hat, holding an umbrella over a little girl scarecrow. The theme is, “We’ve got you covered,” Hanson said.
“I think we’re hoping to keep using him, but do different things with him each year,” she said.
Neighborhood Legal Services used the figure with the umbrella last year in a scarecrow display in front of its business.
Neighborhood Legal is hoping for a prize this year, but Hanson says, “We won’t get our hopes up. There are some excellent challengers.”
