HIDDEN HISTORY: Fourth of July in Batavia, 100 years ago

One hundred years ago this week, Americans were preparing to mark the nation's 137th birthday and also the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Batavia of July 1913 was a growing village of residential neighborhoods, churches, factories, stores and saloons. Clunky contraptions called automobiles were beginning to fill its mostly unpaved streets.
