BATAVIA — What do you think is the greatest show on Earth? Is it the circus or something more natural?
That’s the question artists from the GLOW region had to answer for the latest members challenge exhibit at the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council. The answers were as diverse as a painter’s color palette.
Madeleine Rusch painted the Aurora Borealis. Angie Messerly made a big top cake. Janet Root created a quilt of redwood trees.
They are all part of the new “Greatest Show on Earth” exhibit that opened in the GO-Art! Members Gallery last week. The exhibit will run through May.
“There’s a lot that I didn’t think of, because I always try to think of what people are going to submit before the shows,” said Gregory Hallock, executive director for GO-Art!. “My initial thought was a circus, but I was really hoping people would come up with different ideas. And they did.”
For painter Teresa Tamfer, inspiration came from the sun.
“Sunsets and sunrises are what started me painting,” Tamfer said, talking about her painting, “Peaceful Sunset.” “I had worked in Rochester and saw the sun rise every morning and a lot of sunsets on the way home. Watching the changes in the colors, the light and the movement just draw me in. The shades of the different colors in the sky and the landscape are amazing. Sometimes you see sunsets that inspire awe, or are very dramatic, or like the one I entered — peace and tranquility. Sometimes the colors are so brilliant, I think if I painted it exactly like that, people would not believe it was real.”
What might make this exhibit the greatest show on Earth is that the opening reception, which is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, will be the first event at which GO-Art! can serve alcohol. The organization recently received its liquor license to sell beer, wine and cider from the bar in the Members Gallery.
During the reception, Hallock will also announce the winners of the juried members exhibit that is currently on display in the Main Gallery.
