Residents are invited to join Genesee County Parks, Recreation and Forestry and the Oakfield-Alabama Lions Club for some fishing between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the DeWitt Recreation Area.
The program is free of charge. Fishing guides will be available to help anyone who needs assistance during the free fishing day.
Participants may use fishing equipment provided by Hunters Landing and Cabela’s or bring their own, county officials said.
No fishing license is required, officials said. The event is part of the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Free Fishing Weekend.
Young people up to age 16 may come to the fun and have a chance to win a prize by entering the Kendra Haacke Memorial Fishing Derby sponsored by the Lions Club.
It’s requested that people meet at Pavilion 3 for the fishing.
They’re also asked to register for the free fishing day and/or for the fishing derby by calling (585) 344-1122.
Walk-ins will also be welcome.
“The fishing derby runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. People may register for it. That will be great if they register for it and they let us know that they’d like to use the fishing poles provided,” said Shannon Lyaski, conservation education program coordinator. “Bait will be available.”
