LE ROY — Stanley Styliades will tell you what sets his restaurant apart from any other in Genesee County.
A wide variety of Mediterranean-style food that caters not only to those who love meat but those who don’t.
Meaning plenty of fine cheeses, olive oil, vegetables and spices.
“And the homefries,” Styliades says as he sat in Le Roy Town Diner Wednesday morning. “They’re my own recipe.”
Making that point is a patron, who on her way out tells Styliades how delicious the homefries were.
Le Roy Town Diner opened May 10 at 15 Main St., the previous site of Katie’s Place, which operated for less than a year, and before that, Tyler’s Family Restaurant.
Styliades, who lives in Rochester, where his family moved from Greece in the 1960s, has always been in the restaurant business. He worked at or owned several in Monroe County.
This is his first venture outside Monroe.
“I was idle,” he said. “This came up and I took it. I love Le Roy. It’s a nice, quaint town and reminds me of how Rochester neighborhoods used to be.”
He bought the restaurant on March 10, completely remodeled the kitchen, and was open for business in two months.
He also greatly expanded the menu to include not only regular diner breakfast and lunch fare, but a vast menu that includes paninis, pitas, falafels and gyros.
Oh, and tzatzki, a Greek dish made from yogurt, sour cream and plenty of spices. Other Greek dishes include Tabouleh salad and Dolmades, which are stuffed grape leaves.
The diner features weekly specials, and include generous helpings of whatever is featured. On this morning you could get two eggs, meat, toast and homefries, or a Greek omelet with homefries and toast, all for $3.95. Or two eggs, homefries and toast for $2.95.
They also have an early-bird special and the diner does catering.
The diner is open every day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for now features breakfast and lunch.
Styliades said he eventually wants to have a dinner menu.
