DARIEN — Darien Lake plans to throw patrons into a Tantrum this summer.
Tantrum was revealed Monday as the name of a new roller coaster at the town of Darien amusement park, which will hit speeds surpassed only by The Ride of Steel when it opens in May.
According to Darien Lake, Tantrum riders will embark on a 98-foot vertical lift at a 90-degree angle, going straight up the coaster’s first hill.
“In a matter of seconds, upon reaching its apex, the train plummets into a 97-degree drop and pretzel inversion,” the park said in announcing the ride previously described in planning documents. “Reaching speeds of 52 m.p.h, the coaster snakes through the structure over a bunny hop, keeps riders wondering which way is up or down during an Immelman turn, and finishes with a tilted loop.”
The ride’s top speed is a step above the posted speeds of Darien Lake standbys like the Viper, Predator and Mind Eraser. It will be the seventh roller coaster at Darien Lake, which General Manager Chris Thorpe said builds on the park’s reputation of adding new, thrilling experiences.
“This ride confirms our status as New York State’s Coaster Capital and our commitment to providing guests with cutting edge experiences,” Thorpe said.
The new ride replaces the Thunder Rapids log flume, which will be demolished as part of the $5 million project.
As part of the announcement, Darien Lake began a holiday season push for season pass sales, which as of Monday were $59.99 for unlimited visits, free parking, free and discounted tickets for friends, and other benefits for the 2018 season. Any season pass holders visiting the park prior to Memorial Day will also receive a Tantrum souvenir and other prizes.
