Batavia Players adds to season

BATAVIA – Batavia Players have added a new show to its schedule.

“Broadway Sung Backwards,” scheduled July 27 and 28 at Harvester 56 Theater, 56 Harvester Ave., offers a different take on the typical Broadway-style revue.

The show features musical selections from 21 popular shows, though things aren’t quite what they seem. Ten actors have come together to rehearse a Broadway revue and start discussing the gender differences in musical theater. With the help of their accompanist and set designer, the actors decide to sing the entire review – and some other songs – in the reverse gender. So males will sing female roles, and vice versa.

Tickets, which cost $10 for general admission, $8 for students and seniors, are available by calling (585) 813-3813 or (716) 622-2747.

Director Anthony Giambrone approached the Batavia Players’ Board of Directors about doing the show and it was approved earlier this summer.

The new production means Players has or will present more than a dozen public events this season, one of its busiest ever. The show also means the Harvester venue will have presented or is scheduled to be used for public programming each month of the year (Players, which operates Harvester 56, also allows other groups to use the venue for productions).

The season continues in August with a production of "Camelot" for Players’ annual Summer Youth Theater show; and "That Mysterious Agatha Christie!," a night of one-act plays by the famed mystery writer that will be directed by Michele Case, Rachel Oshlag and Justin Soble, in September; and “Christmas Dreams,” an original work by Patrick Burk in December.

Auditions for the one-acts are expected soon.

A movie series that began in April will continue Oct. 12 with two early movies from acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky, "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream."
