Kohl's opens store in Batavia

Mar 2, 2015

BATAVIA — Sunday’s opening of a Kohl’s department store in the Towne Center at Batavia Place complex came at the perfect time for shoppers.

The department store’s soft opening came the morning after the close of what is believed to be the coldest month in Western New York's recorded history.

Hundreds of customers in heavy winter coats had the veil of winter lifted on entry, as they greeted with a refreshing array of spring and summer fashions, smiling associates and a brightly-arranged store.

“It’s all geared to the customer experience,” said Jermaine Roberson, the store’s manager.

Roberson said the first waves of shoppers were drawn predominantly to a familar array of national brands, many exclusive to the Menomonee Falls, Wisc.-based retailer.

Clothing from Simply Vera Wang, Jennifer Lopez, Juicy Couture, Izod and Disney were all on display at the front of the store, which is bracketed by jewelry and beauty departments.

There are also large baby, footwear and home decor departments in the 57,000-square foot facility.

Offerings will change with the season, but the dozens of brands that form a core of Kohl’s offerings will all have a permanent footprint.

The retailer has more 1,160 stores nationwide, including five in a cluster around Buffalo and four more in the Monroe County.

Roberson said the the Batavia store will offer the programs like Kohl’s Cash and Kohl’s Charge, rewards programs and weekly discounts for seniors in addition to a hassle-free kiosk for registries, returns and online ordering.

Kohl’s will employ around 100 people at the Batavia store. Many were on hand to greet and guide customers Sunday.

“It was exciting when it came time to finally have customers in the building,” Roberson said. “We were ready to deliver. There were a lot of smiles.”

The store, located at 4180 Veterans Memorial Drive, will have a grand opening Friday.

Kohl’s will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with extended hours on Fridays, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
